Mawamba Lodge

The good: lots of tropical animals around, nice pool, tours from the property, helpful staff, fairly secluded, nice view of the canal, good food and drink. The drawbacks: thin walls to the rooms, screen windows up high that don't cover, lots of jungle noise, no hot water at the sink, no WiFi in the rooms

A luxurious, well-placed resort with very friendly and attentive staff. The ladies on reception were fab, as were the restaurant staff and the tour guides. The wildlife in the grounds is exceptional, and the design and decor of Mawamba is flawless. Loved it.

Beautiful property and lots of activities to enjoy. Can't recommend this property highly enough we had the best time.

Great lodge at Tortuguero. Silent & clean and only a short walk from the village.

For the area it is in, the property is decent. There is no service beyond getting you checked in. The focus in this area is to get you to buy more add on services so everything is available at a charge.The people at the reception, restaurant and boat were friendly.

Large, Private Cabana with hammock. Sandwiched between a river and a black sand beach. Quick 1 km walk to a charming town. No AC or internet in rooms.Grounds were lovely with lots of wildlife. Front desk staff were very delightful and helpful. Transportation directly from La Pavona to Mawamba dock. Lots of activities to do at the hotel for a reasonable price such as walking, kayak and boat tours. Pool lounge chairs were always full. Restaurant food and service were mediocre, and over-priced. Stray dogs and cats on property begging for scraps and attention. Overall, one of the best resorts in Tortoguero.

The property of Mawamba Lodge is beautiful. There is a deck over the river with several hammocks and chairs that were just so peaceful and relaxing to just swing and rock back and forth. The pool area was beautiful to lay by and the restaurant food was actually really good. The activities were well planned. I took 2 boat tours back in to the canals and saw lots of wildlife there that was amazing to me. The guides were very pleasant, in particular Moises Cordero. I was with him on my night walk and saw plenty of nightlife, snakes, frogs, toads, spiders, etc. He was very knowledgeable about the animal species and was able to share a lot of information that was helpful to understanding the history and animal life of not only Tortuguero but Costa Rica in itself. Mawamba Lodge is situated in between the beach and the canals so it was a short 5-10 min walk to get from one side to the other. The only thing I can improve is the fact there is no A/C at all. There was a fan over the bed and you had to keep your windows open at all times making it easy for people to see inside your room. Otherwise, I would highly recommend choosing Mawamba Lodge first if given the opportunity.

The grounds were beautiful. The room was basic but met all of our needs. We were able to walk to the village. We tried walking down the beach but couldn’t due to roughness of the sea.
